Vance

Louis (Lewis) Jefferson and Mary Frances Ferrell Vance:  Jeff Vance was mentioned in other histories and I couldn’t find anyone by that name but this man and his son were both named Jefferson so I am assuming he was called Jeff.  The Vance’s lived in Highland for many years and after Lewis died his son lived here with his family for a while (probably #67 on the 1958 Highland map).

Lewis was born July 5, 1857 in Alpine, Utah to John Wesley and Angelia Vail Vance.  Mary was born October 25, 1872 in Sugar Grove, Kentucky to John Bell and Frances Jemima Sweatt Ferrell.  They married February 25, 1891 in the Logan Temple and had eight or more children: John Lewis, Wilford Jefferson, Frances, Harmon Taylor, Kimball, Angus, Zina Gygi and Welton Farrell.  Lewis is listed as a farmer in each census.  In the 1880 census Lewis is with his family in the Alpine precinct, which included part of Highland so it’s uncertain if they lived in Highland at that time.  In 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 they are in Highland with different family members.  Lewis died September 10, 1913.  His son John Lewis married Julia Leah Hopkins May 11, 1927 and in the 1930 census they had two children, Clifton and Leah May, and were living with his mother.  Mary died October 18, 1948 in Salt Lake City and they are buried in the Alpine City cemetery.
