Hawkes
Lower Power Plant
Arthur Saunders & Hazel Wheeler Crouch Hawkes
After the power plant at the mouth of American Fork Canyon began operations in 1907 there were a lot of Power Plant Operators who came to Highland but stayed only briefly. Arthur Hawkes was one of those, arriving in 1936 but not heard of or mentioned again. They must have lived at the power plant (Number 71 on the 1958 Highland map) since there were four homes there.
Arthur was born February 20, 1898, in Park City, Utah to Samuel Mercer and Emilie Marie Andrasen Jule Hawkes. Hazel was born July 24, 1904, in Fremont, Idaho to John Henry and Almira Wilson Crouch. They were married September 10, 1920, in Fremont, Idaho and had two children: Deon Lucille and Donald Thomas.
In 1920, 1930 and 1935 they were living in Fremont, Idaho and in 1940 in Pleasant View, Utah. In 1942 when Arthur registered for the WWII draft they were living in Provo and he was working for Utah Power and Light. Arthur died June 10, 1969, in Salt Lake City and Hazel died October 16, 1987, also in Salt Lake City and they are buried in the Brigham City Cemetery.
